May 2024 ZeMKI member Dr. Dennis Redeker, member of the Lab “Platform Governance, Media and Technology“, organized a roundtable on “Digital Governance between Multistakeholderism and Multilateralism” as part of the first conference of the EU Horizon Europe research project “Reignite Multilateralism via Technology” (REMIT). The conference took place on May 16 and 17, 2024 at KU Leuven and brought together academics with a policy audience from different areas of European and global technology policy. The following speakers from research and practice took part in the roundtable organized by Dennis Redeker: Luca Belli, FGV Law School/CTS-FGV Julia Pohle, WZB Berlin Elena Plexida, ICANN Jamal Shahin, Brussels School of Governance/Universiteit van Amsterdam/United Nations University-CRIS (Bruges) Nicola Palladino, Università degli Studi di Salerno The intensive discussion covered critical topics such as the reform of global digital policy within the framework of the UN Global Digital Compact against the backdrop of a tense geopolitical situation. Discussions on the governance of artificial intelligence and the further development of multistakeholder approaches, as well as the special case of ICANN as a multistakeholder decision-making body, and perspectives from the global South were discussed together with the engaged expert audience. The REMIT project began in March 2023 and will run until February 2027, with one work package being led by ZeMKI.
