Field of Study
Latin American History
CV
Delia González de Reufels was born in Germany to Spanish immigrants and studied English, Romance languages, and Iberian and Latin American history at the University of Cologne and Goldsmiths’ College, London. She earned her Master of Arts degree and subsequently received her Ph.D. in Iberian and Latin American History from the University of Cologne in 2002 with a dissertation on the history of Mexico in the 19th century. In 2004, she took up a junior professorship in “Non-European History with a Regional Focus on South America” at the University of Bremen; since 2010, she has been a professor of “Latin American History” (W2) at the Institute of History (FB 8).
She teaches courses on migration history, women’s and gender history, Latin American demographic history, the history of the military in the Southern Cone, the history of Mexico and its border regions, and Latin America’s relations with the United States. Since 2012, she has been teaching and conducting research in collaboration with the Department of Film Studies at the University of Bremen (Prof. Dr. Winfired Pauleit & Dr. Rasmus Greiner) on the thematic complex of history and film and contributes to the organization and implementation of the International Bremen Symposium on Film. This collaboration has so far resulted in two publications, which appeared in 2015. The history of development aid and population policy after 1945 currently constitute two important fields of research in which the doctoral candidates of the Latin American History Research Group are also involved.
The temporal focus of her research was previously on the early colonial period and the 19th century. Her work now increasingly addresses the 20th century and contemporary history. Regional areas of focus include Mexico, Chile, and the Southern Cone, as well as the Caribbean, with a special emphasis on the Republic of Haiti. Visiting positions have taken her to the Sorbonne Paris 1 as an invited professor (2012), to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., as a scholar in residence (2008), and to the Colegio de Michoacán in Mexico as a visiting professor. She has spent extended periods conducting research and working in archives in Chile, Mexico, the United States, and other European countries.
She is a recipient of the Offermann-Hergarten Foundation Award for dissertations in the humanities from the University of Cologne (2004) and was, among other things, a fellow of the German National Academic Foundation, a fellow of the HSP III/DAAD program, and an Erasmus fellow.
Founder and director of the working group “Latin American History in Global Perspective,” which is based at the University of Bremen and operates under the umbrella of ADLAF e.V. (Working Group for German Latin American Research). Member of the jury for the Johannes Zilkens Doctoral Prize of the German National Academic Foundation (since 2013), liaison professor for the German National Academic Foundation (since 2011), was a member of the selection committee for ERP scholarships (for German graduate students studying at outstanding universities in the U.S.) from 2004 to 2012 and serves as a reviewer for the Humboldt Foundation, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the DAAD (Latin America Division), and the German National Academic Foundation (doctoral funding, basic funding). She is the University of Bremen’s cooperation officer for Colombia and collaborates with the ZMML in the area of teaching with the University of California at Santa Barbara (seminar 2013/14 and 2014/15)
