February 2024 The “unifreunde”, the Society of Friends of the University of Bremen and the Constructor University, will award this year’s Bremen Student Prize for outstanding theses on February 27, 2024. Two prizes were awarded in the field of natural sciences and engineering, two prizes in the field of social sciences and humanities and a special prize from Bruker Daltonik GmbH for the field of physics/electrical engineering. Dr. Irina Zakharova received a prize for her dissertation entitled: “UNDERSTANDING DATA STUDIES: A methodological and conceptual inquiry into research on datafication”. Until the end of last year, Irina Zakharova was a member of ZeMKI and conducted research in Prof. Dr. Andreas Breiter’s “Sociotechnical Systems and Critical Data Studies” lab at the interface between critical data studies, media and communication studies and feminist technology and knowledge studies (STS). In her doctoral thesis, she examines the still young, interdisciplinary field of data studies and asks what those who research datafication understand by it and what methods they use. The doctoral thesis makes a significant contribution to datafication research and allows researchers to position themselves and critically examine the field. The special achievement of the doctorate was recognized by all reviewers of the examination committee with the rating “summa cum laude”. Irina Zakharova has now also received the Bremen Study Award. Congratulations to her! The award ceremony will take place on 27.02.2024 at 6 pm in Bremen City Hall.
