Workshop Towards Development of Mediatization Research on December 5, 2025
5. December 2025
On December 5, the workshop Towards Development of Mediatization Research IX will take place, with this year’s theme being youth, sports, and media.
The event is organized by Katarzyna Kopecka-Piech, Mateusz Sobiech, and Karolina Burno-Kaliszuk at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (Poland) and is a collaboration with ECREA’s TWG Communication and Sport, whose YECREA representative is ZeMKI member Philip Sinner. This year’s host and keynote speaker is Michael Skey from Loughborough University (UK, Erasmus partner of ZeMKI), who will speak on “The Kids Like It, So What Do We Care About the 55-Year-Olds?” Baller League and the Mediatization of Contemporary Sport.
Three projects will be presented in each of four 90-minute sessions and then studied with all participants. ZeMKI will also be represented at the event by Philip Sinner. Together with Jörg-Uwe Nieland and Thomas Neumann (both from the University of Klagenfurt, Austria, Erasmus partner of ZeMKI), he will take a film-analytical look at the TV series “School of Champions” and place it in the context of sports films and the hero’s journey. The lecture then builds a bridge to media socialization research and discusses the potential for analyzing moving image content in the context of coming of age. To this end, he draws on the Praxeological Approach to researching Children’s Socialization, which was developed as part of a 15-year panel study on the media socialization of socially disadvantaged adolescents led by Ingrid Paus-Hasebrink.
