Studies Study abroad UnsplashStudy abroad As part of the international orientation of our degree programs, it is explicitly desired that students enhance their academic profile through experiences abroad and by harnessing language skills. As a student of the B. A. Communication and Media Studies and the M. A. programmes, you have the opportunity to study as an exchange student at a university abroad. Doing so as part of the ERASMUS program is perhaps the easiest option. Exchanges to non-European universities are also possible, but generally require a greater effort and financial commitment. To help you plan your stay at a university abroad as smoothly as possible, please read the following information carefully and pay attention to each point. Early planning In order to make your study abroad a success, do your own research and choose your host university (and country) according to your individual needs and preferences. Once you have an idea of where you want to go, we invite you to seek the advice of the International Office and ZeMKI’s team for internationalization (see list below): UB’s International Office advises you on all organizational questions regarding your stay abroad (application procedure, financing, language certificates, etc.). ZeMKI’s team for internationalization will inform you about the institute’s existing agreements with universities abroad and about all subject-specific questions such as curricular planning (e.g., learning agreement), recognition and follow-up of stays abroad. The most important prerequisite for a successful stay abroad is careful preparation, which depends largely on your own initiative. You should not underestimate the preparation time and should start early, i.e., in the case of a master’s program, right in the first semester. Options for a stay abroad You have three main options: Under the ERASMUS program, our B. A. and M. A. programmes are linked with several universities in Europe through cooperation agreements. A list of all agreements can be found in our brochure for ERASMUS stays. An application to these universities is easier than an individual application to a university abroad and the application procedure is clearly regulated. In addition, tuition fees are waived and you receive a small mobility award. There are also ERASMUS exchange agreements between UB’s other institutes and departments and universities abroad. It should be noted that, although other institutes and departments’ agreements can be used in principle, students of the respective program always have priority. The international officers of the respective institutes (e.g. Institut für Ethnologie und Kulturwissenschaft) can give you information on this. Beyond ERASMUS (and Europe), you can apply to partner universities of the University of Bremen. Please contact the International Office for information on funding opportunities and study places in the country of your choice. Information on cooperation partners of the University of Bremen can be found on this overview page of the International Office. Here, too, it is necessary to consult with the International Officer at ZeMKI with regard to the recognition of academic achievements.
