ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research Report: Recov-19 Project “Between Faith and Pandemic” NewsZeMKI-News12. November 2024 A new report from the Recov-19 project on the topic “Between faith and pandemic – How Corona has changed religious communities” was published in the online magazine “up2date”. Easter 2020: Instead of together with tens of thousands of believers, the Pope celebrated the Easter mass alone with a few other clergy. Elsewhere, digital offerings flourished, such as an Easter service at the US Lakewood Church, with over 195,000 views on YouTube alone. It was impossible to predict at the time how long the pandemic would last and what social and ethical debates it would give rise to. But now it is time to take stock: How have religious communities positioned themselves in discourses about health and illness, for example in relation to vaccinations? What was the relationship between religious communities and national governments? And what role have digital offerings played in religious life? This is what the project “RECOV-19” is investigating.
