New article by Sandra Kero and Josephine B. Schmitt on right-wing extremist communication in social media
19. November 2025
ZeMKI member Sandra Kero recently published an article together with Dr. Josephine B. Schmitt (CAIS) entitled “Narrative, Creative – Immersive? The Immersive Potential of Right-Wing Extremist Communication on Social Media” in the anthology “Democratic Culture in the Metaverse: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Potentials and Perils.”
What is the article about?
The article shows how right-wing extremists use social media to create immersive worlds of experience through storytelling, staging, and platform-specific mechanisms. These act as digital parallel spaces in which emotions, everyday narratives, and ideology intertwine, thus unfolding special potential for bonding and radicalization. The text explains why TikTok, AI-generated images, and gaming environments are playing an increasingly important role in this process – and what opportunities prevention and media education have to effectively counter these developments.
