Research Projects Reignite Multilateralism via Technology (REMIT) ActiveResearch project Duration: 2023 – 2027Project lead: Dr. Dennis RedekerThe four-year EU Horizon Europe project REMIT (Reignite Multilateralism via Technology) creates policy-relevant knowledge on how technologies are governed globally. It further develops academic insights aimed to enable greater international cooperation on technology governance, specifically multilateral governance pathways. The scope of the project is broad, including the governance of technologies such as AI, blockchain, Internet infrastructure, 5G/6G, biotech, financial tech, and defence tech. Eight partners make up the REMIT consortium, including Maastricht University, Universitatea Babes Bolyai, the University of Bremen, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Luiss Libera Universita Internazionale Degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, the University of Tartu, and the European Cyber Conflict Research Initiative (ECCRI). At ZeMKI, Dr. Dennis Redeker leads a works package on the “normative construction of technology governance” of REMIT to better understand the foundation on which (future) governance arrangements can be built. In Bremen, the focus is on research into the governance of civil-use digital technologies, particularly the Internet and AI. As part of the qualitative and quantitative research tasks conducted at ZeMKI, at least two datasets will be created and additional interview research conducted to better understand the background against which effective and legitimate global governance of these technologies can occur. The REMIT project has a strong focus on disseminating research results to a variety of stakeholders, including academia, policymakers and society at large.
