Abstract
This talk examines the shared implications of emerging AI technologies across media industries. Advancements in generative artificial intelligence are bringing rapid changes to communication industries. AI applications can perform increasingly human-like roles in the communication process and, as such, can augment and even automate human media work in profoundly different ways from predecessor technologies. Much of the research regarding the integration of AI into media practice has focused on the impact to specific industries, including journalism, public relations, and advertising. As this talk argues, while such research is valuable, scholars also must examine the collective consequences of AI across industries. This lecture identifies and interrogates some of these key areas of shared AI impacts as a step toward constructing a more robust theoretical understanding of the evolving nature of media work and communication.
