Bio

Andrea L. Guzman is an associate professor of communication at Northern Illinois University, USA. She has been fundamental in formalizing Human-Machine Communication research and supporting its international growth within communication and media studies. Her research focuses on people’s interactions with and perceptions of various forms of artificial intelligence, including voice-based assistants and generative AI, and the implications of AI adoption across different sectors of society. As a former journalist, Guzman also examines the integration of AI into journalism and media industries, and as an educator for nearly two decades has been helping faculty, administrators, and students navigate the pedagogical and ethical implications of AI in the classroom. Guzman is lead editor of The SAGE Handbook of Human-Machine Communication and editor of Human-Machine Communication: Rethinking Communication, Technology, and Ourselves. Guzman’s research has been published in top journals, including New Media & Society, Computers in Human Behavior, and Digital Journalism. Guzman is currently co-authoring a book critically examining voice assistants for Polity.
