ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research DCID Colloquium: GenAI as A Tool for Research and Information Resource for Users News14. January 2025 Michael Reiss from the Leibniz Institute for Media Research will give a lecture on the use of generative AI for research and as a source of information for users as part of the DCID Lab Colloquium on 15 January 2025 at 10:30 am. Abstract: In its brief existence, generative AI, such as ChatGPT, has shown significant disruptive potential both as a tool for social science research and as an information resource for users. In this talk, I will provide a multi-faceted view on generative AI in the context of communication science. To begin, I will explore the potential of generative AI for research tasks such as text classification and annotation, while also addressing the associated risks and limitations. Additionally, I will share recent empirical findings regarding the use of generative AI in Germany, highlighting who uses it, the reasons behind its use, and its various applications, including for political information in the context of the European elections in June 2024. Finally, I will discuss the broader implications of these findings and generative AI for the field. The lecture entitled „Exploring Generative AI in Communication Science: A Tool for Research and Information Resource for Users“ by Michael Reiss (Leibniz Institute for Media Research) will take place on Wednesday, 15 January 2025 from 10:30-11:30 am in the ZeMKI meeting room (R. 60.070).
