Lab Datafication and Mediatization

Recently, a new ZeMKI working paper entitled “The Refiguration of Public Communication: A Relational and Process-oriented Perspective” was published.

The participating research institutions have announced a total of 18 research assistant positions (job scope: DFG 100%, FWF 75%) with the aim of pursuing a doctorate over a four-year period.

The thematic issue on “Agency in Datafied Societies”, edited by Andreas Hepp and Stephan Görland, has been published as the latest issue of the journal Convergence.

ZeMKI member Prof. Andreas Hepp will give a lecture at the conference "Digital Communities - Social proximity from a spatial distance" on Thursday, July 18, 2024.

ZeMKI member Dr Philip Sinner has published two articles in the anthology "COVID-19 und die Sportkommunikation. Der Einfluss der Corona-Pandemie auf Sport, Medien und Journalismus".

The Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) at the University of Bremen, together with the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans Bredow Institute (HBI) in Hamburg and other research institutions in Graz and Vienna, has successfully acquired a Research Unit from the German Research Foundation (DFG) on the topic of "Communicative Artificial Intelligence (ComAI)”.

Special honor for the spokesperson of the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) at the University of Bremen: At the meeting of the International Communication Association (ICA) in Gold Coast, Australia, Prof. Dr. Andreas Hepp was appointed ICA Fellow on June 22, 2024.

ZeMKI member Dr Philip Sinner was invited by Prof Dr Robin Samuel, Dr Anette Schumacher, Dr Hannes Käckmeister, Simone Charles (Digital Documentation and Research Centre (DDRC)) and the Gouvernement du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg | Ministère de l'Éducation nationale, de l'Enfance et de la Jeunesse (MENJE) to the University of Luxembourg.

The pre-release version of the "OpenQDA" software currently being developed at ZeMKI is now available.

This year's annual conference of the International Communications Association (ICA) will take place in Goald Cost, Australia, from June 20 to 24. The ZeMKI will be represented with numerous contributions and ZeMKI members will present research at the institute.

The dissertation of ZeMKI member Katharina Heitmann-Werner has been published by Springer VS under the title 'Zivilgesellschaft und Stadtöffentlichkeit - Eine akteurszentrierte Analyse der kommunikativen Figuration der Stadt' (Civil society and the urban public sphere - an actor-centred analysis of the communicative figuration of the city).

ZeMKI is currently developing “OpenQDA”, an open-source software for the qualitative coding of research data (interviews, observation protocols, etc.).

On 16/05/2024, ZeMKI member Prof. Dr. Andreas Hepp will give a lecture online at 10:00 CET at the Institute for Global Communications & Integrated Media at Fudan University on the deep mediatization of the social world.  

On Friday, 10/05/2024 Prof. Dr. Andreas Hepp will give a keynote speech at the “Mediatization Conference 5 - Mediatization versus Datafication Dialogue or Competition?”. The lecture on “Datafication, automation and communicative AI: Toward a redefinition of mediatization research” will take place from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. hybrid in Lublin or online.

Alex Krause joined the lab ‘Datafication and Mediatization’ at ZeMKI in April 2024 as a research assistant for the project ‘molo.news: validation of a relational platform for urban publicity’. Selim Başoğlu is a research associate and a Ph.D. candidate at the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) since April 2024. Currently, he teaches introductory courses at the University of Bremen while also taking part in several research projects. ZeMKI member Dr. Anke Offerhaus was concordantly elected Dean of Academic Studies in Faculty 9.
