On the Opportunities and Risks of AI in the Classroom

ZeMKI member Prof. Dr. Andreas Breiter discusses the risks, but also the opportunities that AI systems can offer in the classroom in an interview with Lisa Duncan of the Weser-Kurier.
Andreas Breiter highlights AI as an opportunity — as a tool for differentiated instruction and fostering self-directed learning — but warns against becoming overly reliant on AI. In this context, Andreas Breiter emphasizes the need to teach higher-level skills for working with AI systems in school. These include the ability to recognize the biases that an AI system embodies as a result of specific training data, and an understanding that AI systems are dominated by big tech companies.

Andreas Breiter has been Professor of Applied Computer Science at Faculty 3 (Mathematics and Computer Science) at the University of Bremen since July 2008. He is also head of the Institute for Information Management Bremen GmbH, a non-profit research and consulting institute at the University of Bremen funded by the state of Bremen.
