New Publication "Routledge Critical Studies in Video Games and Culture"
2. January 2026
Two new publications in the “Routledge Critical Studies in Video Games and Culture” book series were released in December. One of the publications, authored by former ZeMKI member Dr. Katrin Trattner, addresses “The Role of Enemies in Military Shooter Video Games: On Hostile Ground.”
The series is edited by Gregory Grieve, Kerstin Radde-Antweiler, Lissa Holloway-Attaway, and Xenia Zeiler, and is published by Routledge. The series examines the complex interplay between video games and the critical analysis of cultural phenomena. Focusing on video games, gaming, and gaming cultures, it publishes scholarly monographs and edited volumes that explore the contextual nuances of video games within diverse sociocultural, geographical, and historical contexts. By analyzing individual games, gaming communities, and franchises across various platforms such as PCs, consoles, and mobile devices, the series extends beyond the mere examination of game content. In addition to focusing on the players, it also considers the involvement of entities such as religious institutions, game companies, government groups and other interconnected actors that contribute to the cultural and social influence of gaming. Using a critical cultural approach that analyzes power relations, social inequalities, and cultural hegemony, this series examines the relationship between gaming and socially constructed, contextual, and dynamic values. By incorporating a variety of approaches, theories, and methods, the series aims to illuminate how video games and gaming practices shape communication and society in our increasingly gamified world.
