The Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt) has published the report “The Role of AI in Counterspeech: Potentials and Risks,” co-authored by Prof. Cornelius Puschmann from ZeMKI. The study explores how artificial intelligence can be used to support counterspeech, that is digital responses to hate speech and disinformation.
The publication discusses the potential of AI-supported counterspeech, for example in assisting moderation and lowering barriers to participation in counterspeech. The study also focuses on potential risks such as bias and the long-term societal consequences of automated communication. In addition, it provides recommendations for research and policymaking on the responsible use of AI-based counterspeech and adresses key questions about platform regulation and AI-supported communication. The report therefore also relates closely to the research conducted in the Lab for Digital Communication and Information Diversity on online discourse, hate speech, moderation, and the impact of digital platforms on communication spaces.
