Call for Papers: VIEW Journal of European Television History and Culture, Issue #31
21. January 2026
As part of Special Issue #31 of the VIEW Journal of European Television History and Culture, edited by ZeMKI member Rieke Böhling, among others, contributions on the topic of “Television and the Family” are being sought.
Forty years after David Morley’s study Family Television (1986), which examined everyday television viewing in families and the negotiation of meanings, this Special Issue #31 of the VIEW Journal of European Television History and Culture invites readers to revisit these questions and think them through further. The focus is on the complex relationship between television and family in Europe – from family routines and everyday practices to conflicts, negotiation processes, and conscious decisions for or against television.
Television and family are closely intertwined: even in households that do not use television, its absence is often part of family discussions and social dynamics. This special issue aims to examine these complex interrelationships from both a historical and contemporary perspective and to bring together perspectives from different methodological and theoretical approaches.
Researchers from media and television studies, history, cultural studies, and related disciplines are welcome to submit papers. More information about the call for papers is available here.
